The Photo I Keep Coming Back To
There are photographs that capture a moment, and then there are photographs that hold an entire lifetime.
This is one of those photos for me.

We were sitting side by side, smiling at the camera, surrounded by people and conversation. At the time, it felt like just another happy day together. I had no idea that one day I would look at this picture and wish I could step back into it for just a few minutes.
The man beside me was my husband, my companion, and the person who shared so many ordinary days that now feel extraordinary. We built a life from small things: conversations over dinner, quiet drives, celebrations, disagreements, laughter, and the comfort of simply knowing the other person was there.
Since he passed away, photographs like this have taken on a completely different meaning.
Sometimes I look at his smile and remember exactly how it felt to sit beside him. Other times, I notice tiny details I never paid attention to before—the way he held me close, the warmth in his expression, or how comfortable we looked together.
Grief has taught me something I never expected: the moments we think are ordinary can become the memories we treasure most.
If I could return to this day, I wouldn’t ask for anything extravagant. I wouldn’t change the place, the clothes, or the celebration.
I would simply sit beside him a little longer.
I would hold his hand tighter.
And I would tell him once more how grateful I was that we found each other.
Life continues, even when someone we love is no longer walking beside us. I still smile. I still make new memories. But a part of every beautiful day carries him with me.
And whenever I see this photograph, I don’t only see what I lost.
I see how lucky I was to have loved him at all.
